Look Mom, a Koala Bear!

I woke up feeling rather refreshed given I only managed 7 hours sleep. Today I had the task of making what I can of San Diego. I head for the hotel shuttle that will take me to my first stop – San Diego Zoo. San Diego Zoo was much like Taronga Zoo, just bigger. I only had 4 hours to see what I could before the shuttle would pick me up so I had to get around pretty quickly. There is a large part of the zoo dedicated to all things Australian – more koalas than I’ve ever seen, wallabies, emu’s (or what American’s pronounce as e-moo’s) but alas, no kangaroos. What was hilarious were the conversations overheard about the koalas. Not one person could manage to call them a koala, they had to be called a koala bear. For a country whose bears are 6 feet or more, you’d think they’d find it hard pressed for a koala to be considered a bear. Go figure.

I checked out two animal shows then headed for my pick-up.

So next pit stop, SeaWorld San Diego. I have to confess, I wasn’t expecting much here, but oh how I was wrong! The Shamu show rocked. It’s a killer whale show the park is famous for, and I can see why. They were amazing, as was the dolphin show. I managed to milk 4 hours of fun out of SeaWorld before I hopped onto the bus and headed to Old Town.

So I got to Old Town San Diego or what should be called ‘Little Mexico’ as I’m guessing that’s the history of the place. San Diego has more people of Mexican descent that I can see, than us Caucasian folk. Old Town wasn’t all that interesting so I took the opportunity to grab dinner from Pizza Bella which according to the sign out front was, ‘Voted America’s Best Pizza’. I got news for you Pizza Bella, Forestville Domino’s does a better job.

What I learnt in San Diego:

  • Whilst being an exceptionally warm day, the fog is a constant, which is a shame.
  • Americans love their shorts. It’s short-tastic over here. Not a skirt in sight or even a short that was long enough to cover what some should. Harsh, but seriously.
  • They bet us in the cheap stakes, they have 99 cents stores, so much for our $2 shops.
A picture from The Shamu show at SeaWorld. What you cant tell in that photo is that the weather was scorching.

Another pic from the Shamu show. SeaWorld's famous killer whale show.

A pic of the dolphins featured in SeaWorld's dolphin show.

Sounds good champ. I told you their pizza was shit. Even their dominos is crap. Gotta wait till new york before you start getting quality.

Good to see you have taken full advantage of your cameras as well.

How much can a koala bear? You probably wanted to put a sign on their enclosure: I am not a fricking bear!

You're bringing back memories of my travels on the west coast during the Dark Ages (actually 1974).
Love your blog!

Keep safe,
